On my trip, I noticed a few differences between Germany and Alabama...
transportation:
lots of people rode bikes
and subways
and trains
technology:
all my friends had cell phones that worked around the world

German keyboards were strange (can you find Y? or @?)
money:
everything was expensive since the dollar is so low
you have to pay around $1 to use public bathrooms
food:
food:
lots of meat (like this bratwurst) and potatoes
dogs are allowed in restaurants
almost all trash cans are divided for recycling
weather:
it stayed light until 9:30 or so every night
(and got bright waaay too early in the mornings)
only a few buildings had air conditioning
those buildings were really hot when a "heat wave" took the temperature to around 90
