Who decided we should go home in the dark for almost half the year??

I wonder this every year. And then I turn on my lights.

"camouflage" tree (philadelphia)

on the ubiquity of camouflage

Are you still looking for a Halloween costume? Live in Alabama? Try camouflage. (Everyone else is!)

Two recent sightings:
  • A boy wearing just a camouflage outfit, who claimed to be dressed up as a "weird sort of witch."
  • A "ghost" at a haunted house, who had on a camouflage shirt and pants to go along with his scary mask.

Too bad I don't have any camouflage to wear tomorrow. On the other hand, I'm not sure if I want to blend in this time...

People in Alabama have a general interest in almost all sports—the state is second only to Nevada in the amount of money that its citizens bet on sports, despite the fact that in Alabama, unlike Nevada, sports gambling is illegal.

90 percent of the state’s citizens describe themselves as college football fans. To understand what an absolute minority nonfans are in Alabama, consider this: they are outnumbered there by atheists.

did you know that...
  • if you order tea in Boston you get hot tea?
  • New Hampshire advertises state liquor stores on billboards?
  • some signs in Vermont are in both French and English?
  • some signs in Vermont are only in kilometers?
  • road planners in Massachusetts are very fond of rotaries (traffic circles)?
  • you have to watch out for moose crossing the road in New England?

each year, a tree will fill the five buckets with sap. this only makes enough syrup to fill the quart jar at the bottom. (do you feel smarter now?)

This morning in Vermont, I heard, "It will probably snow at higher elevations today."

This afternoon on one leg of my flight, I heard, "The temperature in Nashville is 90 degrees."

From a sweatshirt and coat to a t-shirt and shorts...I'm home!
